House Casa Veccia in Carate Urio
If buildings were food, this four hundred year old house would be Tiramisu, a dessert made up of three layers of rich flavour – in this case the elegant first floor living/dining area and separate kitchen, the second floor’s master bedroom overlooking the private garden and the terrace, and the third floor bedroom’s beamed ceiling and balcony with a view over the town roofs to the Lake, less than a minutes’ walk away. Although the house is old, it is immaculately decorated and furnished. It’s also in an upmarket location – George Clooney bought a house in the next village – but you can still take it very easy here. Alternatively, there are sightseeing opportunities in Como, along the western branch and most of all in the mid lake triangle of Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna, as well as day trips to Milan, Bergamo and St Moritz.

Location
- Carate Urio is situated on a stretch of Lakeside that is not overrun with visitors. You are more likely to meet a local resident than a fellow tourist in the village shop, bar or restaurant – or even in the supermarket ten minutes drive away. So if you’re looking for an ‘authentic’ Lake Como experience, this house could be ideal for you.
- At the same time, the many sightseeing opportunities in Como; the historic west branch villas Carlotta and Balbianello and the must-see mid Lake triangle of Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna are all easily reached by car, bus or ferry.
- Day trips can also be made to Milan, Bergamo (home of Donizetti) and even St Moritz.
